  1. Somehow, the convergence of National Train Day and Mother’s Day on the same weekend is forcing me to think of David Alan Coe. (OK, who gets the reference? Anyone?)

  2. I do.

    RECITATION:
WELL, A FRIEND OF MINE NAMED STEVE GOODMAN WROTE THAT SONG AND HE TOLD ME IT WAS THE PERFECT COUNTRY & WESTERN SONG.
I WROTE HIM BACK A LETTER AND I TOLD HIM IT WAS NOT THE PERFECT COUNTRY & WESTERN SONG BECAUSE HE HADN’T SAID ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT MAMA,
    OR TRAINS,
    OR TRUCKS,
    OR PRISON,
    OR GETTING’ DRUNK
WELL HE SAT DOWN AND WROTE ANOTHER VERSE TO THE SONG
AND HE SENT IT TO ME,
    AND AFTER READING IT,
I REALIZED THAT MY FRIEND HAD WRITTEN THE PERFECT
    COUNTRY & WESTERN SONG
AND I FELT OBLIGED TO INCLUDE IT ON THIS ALBUM
THE LAST VERSE GOES LIKE THIS HERE:

WELL, I WAS DRUNK THE DAY MY MOM GOT OUT OF PRISON
AND I WENT TO PICK HER UP IN THE RAIN
BUT BEFORE I COULD GET TO THE STATION IN MY PICKUP TRUCK
SHE GOT RUN NED OVER BY A DAMNED OLD TRAIN

For extra credit, connect this up to electoral systems and governance. Or fruit orchards.

  3. To answer the original question, I will celebrate National Train Day by attending the annual membership meeting of Californians for Electoral Reform (see here). Someone may take Amtrak to the meeting, so I guess that connects up trains and electoral reform, but still not Mother’s Day or David Alan Coe.

  4. Too. Many. Events.

My Master Gardener graduation is tomorrow but I have to miss it because I need to be onsite for the Golden Gate chapter CRFG meeting. If I didn’t have either of those, it’s quite likely I would have attended the celebration at Emeryville Station and fervently wish that Congress would get hip to the fact that we’re all going to be knackered if they don’t improve our rail infrastructure before oil rises to $10 a gallon.

  5. Nothing. But I hope to be excused on account of living in Sweden.

Anyway, I’ve been from UmeÃ¥ to Copenhagen and back as well as from UmeÃ¥ to Kiruna and back already this year. And I’ve booked a journey to Denmark in late June.

Oh, and the organisation of railway traffic is a very fascinating subject for the public policy guys.

  6. Yes, in Europe, every day is Train Day, that form of transportation being rather more widely valued there than over here.

  7. Excuse me, but I’m leaving now to take the train to work. The Mt. Washington/Southwest Museum station is a 10 minute walk from my house here in Los Angeles. Guess I’m lucky….
